New Study: Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy Did Not Reduce the Ability of the GastroPanel® Quick Test to Diagnose Atrophic Gastritis

Biohit Oyj Press Release 18.8.2026 at 11.15 am local time (EEST)

A new clinical study provides further evidence supporting the use of Biohit Oyj’s GastroPanel® Quick Test (GPQT) for the detection of atrophic gastritis (AG). In this study conducted in India, regular use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) did not reduce the diagnostic accuracy of GPQT for detecting AG, although, as expected, PPI medication affected the concentrations of individual biomarkers included in the test (1).

PPIs are widely used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other conditions associated with excessive gastric acid secretion. PPI therapy is known to affect gastric physiology and the concentrations of several biomarkers measured by GPQT. Therefore, the potential impact of PPI medication on the diagnostic performance of GPQT is an important challenge in the clinical use of the test (1).

The new study evaluated the effect of PPI medication on the diagnostic performance of GPQT among patients referred for gastroscopy at a leading clinical center in India, Fortis Hospital. More than 70% of the patients enrolled in the study were regular users of PPI medication. Although PPI use affected the concentrations of individual biomarkers, it did not impair the diagnostic accuracy of GPQT specifically for the detection of AG.

Results Complement the Previous Clinical Validation Study

The new analysis focusing on PPI therapy is based on the same patient cohort as the clinical validation study of GPQT published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2025 (2), which included 266 patients referred for gastroscopy. Histological examination of gastric biopsies obtained during gastroscopy confirmed AG in 15.3% of the patients, showing very good agreement with the GPQT results (weighted kappa = 0.823) (2). The newly reported findings concerning PPI use complement this evidence by demonstrating that, in this study population, the diagnostic performance of GPQT for detecting AG remained high despite PPI medication (1).

“The widespread use of PPI medication is an important factor to consider in the clinical use of GastroPanel tests. These findings provide new evidence that, in this patient population, PPI medication did not interfere with the diagnostic accuracy of GPQT in detecting AG. This further supports the clinical utility of GPQT also in populations where PPI use is common,” says Professor Kari Syrjänen, Chairman of the Board, Biohit Oyj.

Information on PPI medication should nevertheless continue to be recorded in the patient’s clinical history, because PPI therapy is known to affect the concentrations of individual biomarkers measured by GastroPanel and may therefore influence the overall clinical interpretation of the test.

“These findings are particularly relevant to everyday clinical practice. The potential effect of PPI medication on diagnostic accuracy has been an important question because these drugs are so widely used. The new evidence reduces uncertainty regarding the detection of atrophic gastritis in patients receiving PPI therapy,” Syrjänen continues.

GastroPanel® Quick Test

GastroPanel® Quick Test is a rapid point-of-care test developed by Biohit Oyj that measures four biomarkers related to gastric health from a blood sample: pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and Helicobacter pylori antibodies. The biomarker profile is used to assess the status of the gastric mucosa and, among other indications, to detect AG and H. pylori infection.

Atrophic gastritis (AG) is characterized by atrophy of the gastric mucosa and, importantly, is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. The prevalence of AG varies between populations and increases with age, reaching up to approximately 20% in elderly people. A substantial proportion of patients with atrophic gastritis are unaware of the condition because it may cause only mild symptoms or remain completely asymptomatic. In many cases, the first clinical manifestations may be anemia resulting from impaired absorption of vitamin B12 or iron, or some of their co-morbidities. For these and other reasons, early detection of AG is important.
