As a CTBUH Award of Excellence winner the winner in the 200–299 meters height category, Karlatornet joins the ranks of the world’s leading tall buildings.
Karlatornet was designed by the internationally acclaimed global practice architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), responsible for some of the world’s most technically and environmentally advanced buildings, including and significant public spaces. renowned for some of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers, like including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the world’s tallest building), One World Trade Center in New York, and the Willis Tower in Chicago.

“This international recognition is proof of the incredible achievement that the entire team behind the project has made and strengthens Gothenburg’s position at the forefront of sustainable urban development. There are 611 apartments, the Gothenburg View observation deck, hotels, restaurants and several other commercial activities in Karlatornet. The building is the natural hub of Karlastaden – a new district that is emerging on Lindholmen in Gothenburg,” says Christian Lindgren, CEO of Doxa AB.

Kent Jackson, Partner at SOM, said: “We are honoured that Karlatornet has been recognized with two CTBUH Awards of Excellence. As Sweden’s tallest building, the tower departs from Gothenburg’s low-density development to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary which will catalyze the transformation of the Lindholmen riverside into a vibrant, people-focused district. This recognition celebrates not only architectural and engineering achievement but also our contribution to a skyline and a community, designed for people to live, connect, and thrive.”

Founded in 1969, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) brings together the building industry’s diverse stakeholders, including architects, developers, investors and tenants, with the goal of developing better and more sustainable buildings and cities. The CTBUH award will be officially presented at the organization’s annual conference 6–9 October 2025 in Toronto, Canada.
