Meta Platforms (META) is facing a class action lawsuit from a group of publishers on allegations that the company illegally used copyrighted content to train its artificial intelligence platform Llama, multiple news outlets reported Tuesday.
The parties claim that Meta got access to books and journal articles from pirating websites and used these to train its large language models, according to reports.
"AI is powering transformative innovations, productivity and creativity for individuals and companies, and courts have rightly found that training AI on copyrighted material can qualify as fair use. We will fight this lawsuit aggressively,"a Meta spokesperson said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.
The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court by publishers Elsevier, Cengage Learning, Hachette, Macmillan, and McGraw Hill, as well as author Scott Turow, according to Reuters.
