Redefining the Role of Commissioned Research, Inderes’ study on Swedish retail investors 

A new study by Inderes, conducted by Nepa followed 1,000 Swedish private investors with detailed views on how Sweden’s growing retail investor base consumes information, whom they trust, and how they make investment decision.

The study found out that 37% of participants express trust in commissioned/paid research providers, and just 11% use commissioned research as an information source. Even among active traders and various investments forum participants, only 16% say they consider commissioned/paid research recommendations important.

“The findings confirm our hypothesis that commissioned research, in its current form, does not meet the needs of retail investors, who prioritize transparency, neutrality, and data-driven insights over promotional content,” says Eero Alasuutari, Inderes’ Head of Brand & Marketing.

The commissioned research market is in need of renewal to better serve retail investors as a reliable source of investment information, instead of serving the companies as a means of promotion.
