Andfjord Salmon Group AS (Andfjord Salmon) has successfully completed the first smolt release into pool K2 at its facility at Kvalnes on Andøya.
Approximately 800,000 smolt with an average weight of around 110 grams have been released into the pool. The fish have adapted quickly and settled well in their new surroundings.
Pool K2 is Andfjord Salmon’s fourth pool in operation, alongside pools K0, K1 and K3, and represents a significant step-up in production capacity at Kvalnes. With five pools now ready for operation, the company’s total production capacity is 11,000 tonnes.
“We are very pleased to bring a fourth pool into operation, further scaling up production capacity and volumes at Kvalnes. The biological performance in our three other operational pools has been solid throughout their respective production cycles, and we look forward to replicating these healthy conditions in pool K2,” says Martin Rasmussen, CEO of Andfjord Salmon.
Pool K2 will be operated in line with the company’s combined post-smolt and grow-out strategy, following the same operating model applied in pool K1 to date. A portion of the fish will be sold early as post-smolt, while the remaining fish will be grown to market size. The grow-out salmon will subsequently be harvested in several batches at different weight intervals, in line with Andfjord Salmon’s strategy of continuously optimizing biomass density in the pools.
Located at Andøya on the Arctic Archipelago of Vesterålen, Norway, Andfjord Salmon is developing the world's most sustainable and fish-friendly aquaculture facility of its kind. Through a proprietary flow-through system, Andfjord Salmon combines the best from ocean and land-based salmon farming. In its pilot production cycle, the company achieved an industry-leading survival rate of 97.5 percent, feed conversion ratio of 1.05, superior share of 91.1 percent, and required 1 kWh to produce one kilogram of salmon.
