11:32 AM EDT, 05/13/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include response from a Meta spokesperson in the fourth paragraph.)

Meta (META) employees held an internal protest against the installation of mouse-tracking systems at various offices in the US, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing pamphlets seen by the news outlet.

People working in the company distributed flyers urging their colleagues to join a digital petition against the data collection practices, the news outlet reported.

The labor action surfaced approximately one week before the social media company is reportedly expected to lay off 10% of its workforce.

In a statement emailed to MT Newswires, a Meta spokesperson said "If we're building agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers, our models need real examples of how people actually use them such as mouse movements, clicking buttons, and navigating dropdown menus. To help, we're launching an internal tool that will capture these kinds of inputs on certain applications to help us train our models. There are safeguards in place to protect sensitive content, and the data is not used for any other purpose."
