Seafarers'Union Threatens Indefinite Strike on Eimskip's Vessels

02:17 AM EDT, 05/18/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Shipping company Eimskipafélag Íslands (EIM.IC), or Eimskip, received a notice from the Seafarers'Union of Iceland that workers on three of the company's vessels would begin an indefinite strike on May 25 unless a new deal is reached.

The agreement, covering the vessels Brúarfoss, Dettifoss, and Selfoss, expired at the end of 2025, according to a Sunday release. The union previously called for a temporary strike on the vessels from April 12 to April 15, but later withdrew the call on April 8. Meanwhile, a temporary strike by harbor employees originally scheduled for April 13 was postponed until the period of May 26 to May 28.

Eimskip is in talks with the Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise and the union, and expects to reach a deal to avoid the strike, which would disrupt the sailing schedules and service levels.
