(Alliance News) - US initial jobless claims were higher than expected in the week just gone, number on Thursday showed.

According to the Department of Labor, initial jobless claims totalled 211,000 in the week to May 9, rising from 200,000 a week prior. The prior reading was upwardly revised slightly from 199,000.

The latest reading topped the FXStreet cited consensus of 205,000.

Continuing jobless claims for the week to May 2 totalled 1.782 million, rising from 1.758 million. The prior reading was downwardly revised from 1.766 million.
