NKT completes swift turnkey repair of export cable at Beatrice offshore transmission system
NKT successfully completed a turnkey repair of one of the 220 kV high-voltage AC subsea export cables connecting the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm in the Scottish Moray Firth to the Aberdeenshire coast. The repair was executed in just 38 days.
In April 2025, an unplanned transmission outage occurred on one of two of Beatrice’s Transmission Capital Partner (TCP) owned export cables bringing renewable electricity to shore for around 450,000 UK households and reducing the site’s export capacity by 50%. Recognising the importance of a timely repair to restore the export transmission system to full operation, TCP and asset operator SSE Renewables on behalf of owners Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd. initiated a highly effective, coordinated response led by NKT.
The cable, which was not manufactured by NKT, was repaired using NKT’s adaptive rigid sea joint (ARSJ). Central to the swift turnkey repair were two of those joints, which were mobilised from NKT’s stock within days. These joints are designed to work with most high-voltage subsea AC cables from 110kV to 300kV, regardless of manufacturer, making them ideal for emergency repairs where compatible spare parts are unavailable or could not be used.
- A key enabler for the rapid repair was NKT’s ability to provide the adaptive rigid sea joints directly off the shelf, allowing us to use NKT repair services on this asset expediting the repair program in advance of other options available to us, said Bruce Turner, Asset Manager from Transmission Capital Partners, the offshore transmission owner responsible for operation and maintenance of the export cable infrastructure.
The repair was executed using NKT’scable handling system, which transforms standard construction vessels into fully equipped cable repair vessels. In this case, the system was deployed aboard theNorth Sea Giantfrom Ocean Installer. The cable handling system was designed to have a compact footprint and broad cable compatibility, allowing for rapid mobilisation. Within just six days, the North Sea Giant was mobilised in Eemshaven and later loaded with the customer’s spare cable.
- It was a privilege to be part of a project team that successfully delivered such a complex repair within an exceptionally short timeframe, finalising the repair several months earlier than alternative deployable repair solutions, and substantially minimising downtime and significantly reducing energy and revenue losses. The key to this achievement was the strong collaboration between Transmission Capital Partners, Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd, and NKT. Everyone involved demonstrated a clear commitment to achieving a successful outcome, said Alanna Benians, Beatrice General Manager at SSE Renewables, operator of the offshore wind farm and one of the owners of Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd.
The offshore operation was successfully completed, demonstrating NKT’s strategic planning and execution capabilities. The cable was re-energised by the end of July, just 38 days after contract signing, fully restoring the transmission system’s export capacity.
- NKT’s comprehensive service portfolio and innovative technologies enabled a significantly accelerated repair process. We are proud to have supported the Beatrice offshore wind farm in returning the export system to full operation swiftly, contributing to the delivery of clean energy from wind power to the mainland grid, said Axel Barnekow Widmark, EVP, Service & Installation at NKT.
This successful repair highlights NKT’s ability to deliver fast, reliable, and flexible service solutions even on cables not manufactured by NKT, which reinforces NKT’s position as a trusted partner in the offshore energy sector.
