American Water, Essential Utilities Say Kentucky Regulator Approves Proposed Merger

03:54 AM EDT, 04/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- American Water (AWK) and Essential Utilities (WTRG) said late Wednesday that the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved their proposed merger.
The all-stock deal will create a combined utility company serving more than 4.7 million water and wastewater customers and about 740,000 gas connections, the companies said.
The merger is expected to close by the end of Q1 2027, subject to other closing conditions, American Water and Essential Utilities said.
