Smoltek Showcases Ultra-Thin Capacitor Technology for Next-Generation AI and High-Performance Computing at Semicon Taiwan

Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB (publ) (“Smoltek” or “the Company”) announces its successful participation at Semicon Taiwan 2025, held September 10–12. The subsidiary, Smoltek Semi was invited by strategic partner ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute, Taiwan) to showcase its ultra-thin CNF-MIM (Carbon Nanofiber Metal-Insulator-Metal) capacitor technology. The technology is specifically being developed for power management of AI and high-performance computing (HPC) systems as well as for edge devices. CNF-MIM capacitor technology combines high capacitance density with low ESL and ESR in an extremely thin form factor enabling advanced integration. These features are critical for powering the next generation of advanced semiconductor chips at a competitive cost.

The CNF-MIM capacitor technology addresses some of the most pressing bottlenecks in next-generation AI processors, high-performance computing (HPC), and edge computing. These advanced applications require capacitors that are not only extremely thin to be integrated directly under processor chips but also provide high capacitance density, low parasitic inductance (ESL), and low parasitic resistance (ESR).

Unlike traditional deep trench capacitors (DTC), Smoltek’s additive process grows high aspect ratio carbon nanofibers directly on the substrate. This enables ultra-thin, scalable structures coated with high-performance dielectrics in a single ALD cycle—cutting costs while matching or exceeding DTC performance.

Dr. Arthur Lin, Division Director at ITRI, highlighted the relevance of CNF-MIM:
“The development of AI and other powerful chips demands high speed. Speed and power consumption are the most important in the development of AI-servers. But also heat dissipation and energy savings. And for the future of AI, high speed and low power consumption will be of most importance.”

“For high-density capacitors the CNF-MIM technology can provide a higher aspect ratio and larger specific surface area, which is a technological advantage. And with the support of ITRI I believe that we, after the full integration, can deliver a capacitor product with strong market competitiveness in a very short time,” said Dr. Lin.

Magnus Andersson, CEO of Smoltek, added:
“Being selected by ITRI to present our CNF-MIM technology at one of the world’s most important semiconductor events is a strong validation of our approach. As AI, HPC, and edge computing transform entire industries worldwide, the demand for stable, energy-efficient, and miniaturized power delivery solutions is accelerating. Together with ITRI, we believe that CNF-MIM with clear is poised to become a leading next-generation capacitor technology.”
